Pickup truck driver in fatal Bintulu accident believed to be under influence of alcohol

KUCHING, April 19: The driver of the pickup truck that was involved in a fatal accident at the Paragon traffic light at Jalan Sultan Iskandar in Bintulu on Friday night (April 18) was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol.

In a statement, Bintulu district police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the driver had been detained for further investigation.

“The accident involved a pickup truck and a car and was believed to have occurred when the driver of the pickup, who was alone, was heading from Jalan Tun Razak (Tanjung Batu) towards the Paragon traffic lights on Jalan Sultan Iskandar.

“When the pickup reached the front of the Paragon traffic light, he collided into the rear of the car, which a male driver and three other passengers were in,” he said.

Following the collision, the driver of the pickup truck lost control and crashed into a traffic light pole, while the car was pushed onto the road divider due to the force of the impact.

As a result of the accident, two female passengers in the back seat died at the scene while the driver and front-seat passenger, who is a female, were injured.

“The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (for driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs),” he said.

At the same time, he also advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information pertaining to the case.
