KUCHING, Aug 13: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan National (BN) joint coalition continue to reign over Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Penang while Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu are still being tightly clenched by Perikatan Nasional (PN).
The polling day for the six states in Peninsular Malaysia yesterday (Aug 12) saw Democratic Action Party (DAP) retain all 19 seats contested in the Penang state election, contributing to 29 seats won by PH-BN and enough to form the state government.
The other ten seats won were contributed by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) — 7 seats, Barisan Nasional (BN) — 2 seats, and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) — 1 seat, while the remaining 11 seats that PH-BN did not win went to PN.
Penang PH chairman Chow Kon Yeow is expected to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Penang today (Aug 13), continuing his second term since being appointed in May 2018.
In Negeri Sembilan, PH-BN secured a simple majority to form the state government after winning over 20 seats against PN before the official results announcement.
The unity government coalition won 31 out of 35 seats, while PN took the remaining seats.
In Selangor, however, although PH-BN managed to win 34 seats, enough to form the state government, its performance was not as good as the 2018 state election, where PH had won 51 out of 56 total seats.
This time, it was safe to say that it was a close call for PH-BN as it left PN behind, securing only 22 seats.
Meanwhile, Kedah saw 36 seats being contested, with PN winning the largest number of seats at 33, leaving behind only three seats for PH.
On the other hand, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) retained Terengganu and Kelantan with a landslide victory where it swept clean all seats in Terengganu and left only two seats for PH-BN in Kelantan. — DayakDaily
