KUCHING, Oct 19: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) is targeting to create four gas hubs in Miri, Bintulu, Samalaju and Kuching with a total projected investment of RM65 billion over 10 years inclusive of downstream value-added industries.

Revealing this plan as part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said these hubs will serve the whole Sarawak as the ‘Hub & Spoke’ model, aiming to deliver statewide access to sufficient gas supply and clean energy.

“In the immediate term, the first project to be implemented for the Miri Hub will be the 400 megawatt power plant to ensure energy security for northern Sarawak.

“For Samalaju Hub, Petros will lay a gas pipeline and together with Sarawak Energy Berhad, build a power plant. This is critical to completing Samalaju as a heavy industry zone.

“These projects alone will require investment of around RM6 billion,” he said when addressing Petros’ 5th anniversary celebration at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) tonight.

Abang Johari pointed out that the gas hubs plan will spur economic activities in Sarawak to realise Vision 2030.

He also expressed confidence that the Sarawak Gas Roadmap will be a game changer for Sarawakians.

“It is a key supporting pillar in our aspiration of high income and advanced State,” he added.

Meanwhile, the event also witnessed the exchange of three agreements between Petros and Petronas for product sharing of Block SK407 in offshore Miri, for Miri Gas Supply and for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage collaboration.

Deputies Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Petros chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo, Petronas chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh and Petronas executive vice president and chief executive officer for Upstream Datuk Adif Zulkifli were among those present. — DayakDaily
