KUCHING, Nov 11: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) today inks two strategic energy agreements and a storage study agreement with international industry players to unlock Sarawak’s onshore exploration potentials through targeted programmes, and to progress Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) projects in Central Luconia, Sarawak.

The agreements, witnessed by PETROS Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo, were signed with Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), SC Tubular Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SCTSM), Superconducting Sensor Technology Corporation (SUSTEC) and Woodside Energy, demonstrating Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to energy growth through strategic partnerships.

“Today marks another milestone for PETROS another milestone for PETROS in driving Sarawak’s energy future. Though these collaborations, we are strengthening partnerships and embracing innovation to unlock new opportunities in exploration and low-carbon development,” said Hamid Bugo in his speech.

Together with its global partners, he said PETROS is shaping a reliable, equitable, and inclusive energy ecosystem aimed at supporting Sarawak’s long-term growth and prosperity.

According to the press statement, PETROS will collaborate on its first onshore exploration project with JOGMEC in the Mukah-Balingian region.

The partnership will provide both sides with deeper insights into Sarawak’s subsurface, paving the way for sustainable, long-term onshore oil and gas development. Crucially, it will also build local expertise, empowering Sarawakian talent to spearhead innovation and champion responsible exploration.

PETROS is also launching a Proof-of-Concept Study with SCTSM and SUSTEC using SUSTEC’s SQUID-TEM (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device – Transient Electromagnetic Method) technology to detect oil and gas signals at the Adong Kechil West field near Miri.

This marks the first deployment of the advanced technology in Sarawak, enhancing exploration precision, reducing uncertainty, and unlocking new potential from the State’s hydrocarbon resources.

For CCUS, PETROS also signed a Storage Study Agreement (SSA) with Woodside Energy, a global energy company with extensive experience in oil and gas, as well as experience in new energy products and low-carbon services.

PETROS was represented by Abang Arabi (second right).

The agreement, established under the Sarawak Bid Round 2024, covering Site 3A in Central Luconia, offshore Sarawak will see Woodside assess the technical and commercial feasibility of safely storing carbon offshore in the ground.

This collaboration supports PETROS’ vision to position Sarawak as a regional hub for CCUS and advance a low-carbon industrial transition.

Representing PETROS in the agreements were Vice President for Subsurface and Development Jeremy Wong, and Senior Vice President for Sarawak Resource Management Dato Abang Arabi Abang Narudin, alongside executives from JOGMEC, SUSTEC, SCTSM, and Woodside.

Collectively, these three strategic partnerships will strengthen Sarawak’s energy capabilities, accelerate innovation in exploration and low-carbon technologies, create new opportunities for local talent and businesses, and support the State’s vision to become a regional hub for efficient energy development. — DayakDaily
