KUCHING, March 8: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) recently wrote to Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) to initiate discussions on the details of their collaboration in Sarawak’s oil and gas (O&G) sector.

Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof said the letter serves as an initial step to work out the specifics of their cooperation, particularly in aligning legal and commercial arrangements.

“For now, let Petros and Petronas work out all the details, including the commercial arrangement and how to align the two existing laws—the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and Sarawak’s Oil Mining Ordinance 1958—to move forward together.

“The administrative and technical details have to be worked out by both PETRONAS and Petros.

“I believe Petros has already written a letter offering a way forward to PETRONAS and is still waiting for a response,” he told reporters after a bubur pedas distribution programme in Satok today.

When asked when the letter was sent, Fadillah said it was likely within the past week.

He emphasised that the next course of action depends on PETRONAS’ response.

If no agreement is reached at the working level, then the matter will be escalated to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“If they (Petros and PETRONAS) cannot resolve the details, only then the Prime Minister and our Premier will step in,” he said. – DayakDaily
