KUCHING, July 15: The upcoming flagship PETROS Multifuel Station (MFS) Batu Kawa, which offers hydrogen (H2) refuelling facility, has begun receiving its 120kg daily supply of green hydrogen from the Darul Hana H2 plant via tube trailers, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s clean energy journey.

In a media release today, SEDC Energy (SEDCE) highlighted that the flagship PETROS MFS Batu Kawa celebrated a historic moment on July 4 with the first inter-station delivery of green hydrogen in Malaysia, and potentially the first in Asean, between Darul Hana and Batu Kawa.

Located approximately 10 kilometres away, the Darul Hana on-site hydrogen plant produces up to 150kg of green hydrogen per day.

“With this new landmark for Kuching both MFS Batu Kawa and MFS Darul Hana will make the city to be at par with the other hydrogen ready cities in the world,” SEDCE said.

Currently in its testing and commissioning phase, the hydrogen refuelling facility at PETROS MFS Batu Kawa is being utilised to supply five Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) operated by SEDCE.

These vehicles, powered entirely by hydrogen, are used by Sarawak’s top leaders, including the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his three deputies Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, along with SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain.

Dr Sim recently visited the MFS Batu Kawa site to witness the refuelling of his Toyota Mirai as part of the station’s ongoing testing and commissioning exercise.

SEDCE emphasised that the state-of-the-art MFS Batu Kawa is built according to stringent international safety standards and offers a unique combination of conventional fuel, electric vehicle (EV) charging, and hydrogen refuelling, alongside quick-service dining options for the surrounding community and travellers.

SEDCE, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), oversees the development of the hydrogen value chain and retail downstream oil and gas business in Sarawak through the PETROS MFS network.

Currently, 10 fully operational standard MFS stations serve key locations, including MFS Darul Hana, Daro, Kanowit, Kuala Matu, Brooke Drive (Sibu), Selangau, Tatau, Kapit, Sungai Asap, and Jepak.

With the completion of both MFS Darul Hana and MFS Batu Kawa, Sarawak is gearing up for four more flagship stations in Bintulu, Miri, Sibu, and Sri Aman, with construction at Bintulu along Jalan Sultan Iskandar slated to commence soon.

“These flagship hubs will anchor Sarawak’s hydrogen and EV infrastructure along the Pan Borneo Highway, complementing standard MFS stations that focus on conventional fuels and EV charging,” SEDCE explained.

In addition, three standard or non-flagship MFS are currently under construction, with more than 40 new sites being prepared to expand the Sarawak’s clean energy network. Upon completion, these stations will provide a network of EV charging facilities on top of conventional fuel to its customers.

Beyond retail, SEDCE is driving upstream projects including the Rembus Hydrogen Plant, which will supply fuel for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), featuring hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles and buses.

SEDCE is also spearheading large-scale international projects, the Japan-led H2ornbill Project, and South Korea’s H2biscus Project, under the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub. Through these integrated efforts, SEDCE and Sarawak are advancing Malaysia’s energy transition towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050. — DayakDaily
