KUCHING, Sept 14: The Sarawak Association For the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled Children (PERKATA) Malaysia Day Charity Run brought together 700 Malaysians of diverse races and backgrounds in a show of compassion and unity to support children with special needs.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who launched the event, praised the spirit of inclusivity shown by participants, describing it as a true reflection of Malaysia Day’s theme of compassion.

“It is heart-warming to be celebrating this day with the community reaching out to ensure our special children know they are included and valued.

“This is the spirit of unity and belonging we are proud to have. This is more than a run–it is a celebration of leaving no one behind,” he reportedly said in a press release today.

The run, held this morning, offered three distances–5km, 3km and 1.5km–to ensure accessibility for all participants, including many of PERKATA’s students and their families who joined the fun-filled event.

PERKATA vice-president Mohd Jaberden Nasir extended gratitude to the main sponsor Ask4Key Sdn Bhd, as well as co-sponsors Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), OCI, TerraSus, and other supporting companies including Cats FM, Eastern Gas and Energy, Serira Sdn Bhd, Aqua Blue, Chica.go7, Farley, H&L, Milo, Munchy, SCR and Sunquick.

He stressed that community support is vital in sustaining PERKATA’s services, especially after its reserves were depleted during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Those who missed the charity run may still contribute by donating any amount to PERKATA via CIMB Bank (account number 800 5075332) or by contacting the organisation’s office at 082-426301 or 010-6676301. – DayakDaily
