KUCHING, June 30: The terms of service for existing councillors of 24 local authorities will be extended another year.
Disclosing this, Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Penguang Manggil said the decision was made as the terms of more than 700 councillors across Sarawak will expire by the end of the month.
“The councillors’ terms will expire end of the month. Their terms will be extended for another year,” Penguang told DayakDaily.
This new decision will affect 765 councillors appointed by 24 local authorities across Sarawak.
Under normal circumstances, local councillors are appointed by the Sarawak government and their appointments usually last two years.
Following the blanket decision to extend the terms of service of all councillors, the terms of council chairmen of various local authorities will also automatically be stretched to another year.
This means council chairmen of all 24 local authorities including the more populated municipalities such as Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, Miri City Council (MCC) chairman Adam Yii and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting will continue to helm their respective councils for another half term. — DayakDaily
