Pending rep, SUPP Stakan chief reach amicable settlement in court over defamation lawsuit

KUCHING, Aug 29: The defamation suit filed by Democratic Action Party (DAP) Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong Wui Wui against Sarawak United Peoples’ Party(SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok has been settled amicably in court.

Legal counsel for Yong told Kuching High Court Judge Leonard David Shim that both parties has reached an amicable settlement for the suit by entering into a Deed of Settlement.

Both parties finally reached settlement with terms where Sim agreed to withdraw his statement and tendered his unconditional apology to Yong and undertake not to repeat the same offensive word in future.

Both parties entered into deed of settlement and Sim in court said he regretted, withdrew, and unconditionally apologised to Yong over the said post.

Sim also agreed to post and pin a public apology on his Facebook page for not less than seven days.

Yong had demanded Sim apologise for labelling the former a ‘Sarawak traitor’ in his Facebook post dated April 29, 2021.

On May 7, 2021, a letter of demand was served on Sim from Chong Brothers Advocates acting on Yong’s behalf, demanding an apology to be made on several platforms with regards to Sim’s Facebook post.

Sim after consulting his legal advisors and the party’s legal advisors upon receiving the letter of demand, had on May 8 announced that he will be facing this matter head on in court.

Yong was represented by counsels Chong Siew Chiang, Hii Yiik Yew, Sim Kiat Leng and Sharon Lo Min Hui while Sim Kiang Chiok was represented by counsels Tony Ling and Nathan Ting. — DayakDaily
