KUCHING, May 21: Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang has proposed an amendment to the Sarawak Constitution to increase the number of ministers in the Sarawak Cabinet, citing the State’s rapid development and the growing complexity of its governance responsibilities.

Speaking during the motion of appreciation on the TYT’s address, Wilson noted that the current constitutional limit of 10 ministers was established many years ago during a vastly different phase of Sarawak’s political and economic landscape.

“Today, Sarawak plays a much more prominent role not only within Malaysia but also on the global stage, particularly in strategic sectors such as green energy, digital transformation, education, infrastructure, and economic diversification. Our governance structure must evolve in tandem with these growing responsibilities,” he said.

He emphasised that increasing the number of ministers would allow for more specialised portfolios, improve policy implementation, and enhance the overall administrative efficiency of the Sarawak government.

“This is a necessary and timely step to ensure Sarawak remains agile, responsive, and future-ready in managing its development agenda,” he added.

Wilson also took the opportunity to commend the dedication of Sarawak’s civil service, highlighting that initiatives such as the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) and the provision of monthly special allowances reflect the government’s recognition and appreciation of their contributions.

“More efforts must be made to provide professional development opportunities and create a conducive working environment to further enhance public service delivery,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the State’s leadership, Wilson concluded, “Under the capable leadership of our Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and the Sarawak government, we believe Sarawak is on the right track to becoming a high-income State with more balanced regional development across the nation.” — DayakDaily
