KAPIT, Nov 27: Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang has urged authorities to investigate the root cause of the flash flood that devastated several areas in Kapit and claimed the life of a local pastor today.

He noted that the heavy rainfall during the early hours of the morning led to a rapid rise in water levels, inundating critical facilities, including schools and government quarters, and impacting areas such as Sg Amang, Rh Dennis, Rh Tatai Emas, and Melatai.

Families in these areas are facing significant disruptions as floodwaters continue to submerge homes and infrastructure.

Adding to the tragedy, a landslide struck Rh William Ubu in Sg Sut, causing severe damage to the longhouse and raising concerns about the safety of its residents.

“I wish to express my deepest sympathy to those who have been affected by this unfortunate natural disaster.

“I assure you that efforts are underway to coordinate immediate assistance and to address the needs of all affected communities,” he said in a statement today.

The flood also claimed the life of Pastor Bangau, who passed away when his car was trapped in a roadside drain overwhelmed by rising waters.

Wilson extended heartfelt condolences to the pastor’s family, saying: “On behalf of the people of Kapit, I share in your grief and assure you of our support during this difficult time.”
