KUCHING, Nov 4: A 37-year-old storekeeper was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for installing a hidden camera in the ceiling of the restroom at his workplace.
Should he fail to pay the fine, he faces a six-month prison sentence.
The ruling was delivered by Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan after Toh Lik Seng pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which penalises actions meant to insult the modesty of others. The offence carries a possible prison sentence of up to five years, a fine, or both.
According to the case facts, the incident came to light on September 30, 2024, when the male complainant, the director of a company located in the Muara Tabuan Light Industrial area, discovered the concealed camera mounted on the restroom ceiling around 2.30pm.
After inspecting the camera’s memory card, the director found footage showing Toh installing the device.
Following this discovery, a police report was filed, leading to Toh’s arrest the following day (October 1). Investigations confirmed that Toh had placed the hidden camera specifically in the employee restroom within the company’s premises.
The video evidence from the camera’s memory card captured Toh’s face and actions while installing the device.
The prosecution was led by Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while Toh was represented by lawyer Chan Khoon Moh. — DayakDaily
