MIRI, Aug 7: A 33-year-old local man was killed in a hit-and-run accident while walking along Jalan Dato Sri Joseph Balan Seling near KPJ Specialist Hospital here at around 2am today.
According to Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had earlier been drinking with a co-worker at a shop in Permyjaya.
The two were reportedly walking home to Krokop under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
“The co-worker had left the victim to walk alone. Upon reaching the traffic light area near a PETRONAS station, he realised the victim was no longer behind him and later found him lying by the roadside,” he said in a statement.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been sent to the Forensic Department at Miri Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
“The cause of death remains under investigation,” Mohd Farhan added.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Authorities are calling on members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant information to come forward and assist the investigation. They may contact Traffic Investigation Officer Mohd Faizul Ab. Rahim at 014-8582582 or 085-430479, or report to the nearest police station.
Mohd Farhan also urged the public to immediately report any accidents to the police and reminded road users to always drive responsibly and adhere to traffic laws to ensure the safety of all. — DayakDaily
