KUCHING, Aug 2: Several roads in Kuching will be closed to ensure the smooth operation of the street parade rehearsals on Thursday (Aug 3) and Friday (Aug 4) as well as the actual day for the street parade on Saturday (Aug 5) in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th anniversary of independence.
According to a statement by Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the street parade will feature 60 contingents and will begin at Travilion and end at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will also be present at the event.
PDRM emphasised that road closures and detours will be enforced during the street parade rehearsals on Thursday (Aug 3) and Friday (Aug 4) beginning at 6pm until the end of the rehearsals.
The affected roads are:
• Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman/Jalan Main Bazaar
• Jalan Borneo/Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman
• Jalan Padungan/Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman
Meanwhile, during the actual event on Saturday (Aug 5), road closures and detours will be enforced starting at 12pm and end once the event has concluded.
The affected roads are:
• Jalan Padungan/Sri Aman roundabout
• Jalan Ban Hock/Sri Aman roundabout
• Sri Aman roundabout/Jalan Abell
• Jalan Abell/Jalan Abell traffic light (Hotel Longhouse)
• Jalan Abell exit/Exit to Jalan Padungan (Jalan Chan Chin Ann)
• Jalan Song Thian Cheok/Jalan Padungan
• Jalan Bukit Mata traffic light/Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman
• Sk St Mary’s traffic light/Jalan McDougall exit/Jalan Wayang
• Jalan St Temple/Jalan Wayang
• Jalan Main Bazaar/Jalan Gambir
• Jalan Pearl traffic light/Wawasan/Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg
In addition, PDRM stated that those who wish to observe the street parade should park in the designated areas, which are as follows:
• Reservoir Park
• Saujana building
• Sarawak Plaza parking lot
• Civic Centre
• Tun Jugah building
• Medan Pelita building
• Plaza Merdeka parking lot
• Around Travilion building
• Jubilee Sports Ground parking area
• Around Petanak area
“The general public is instructed to obey the traffic control instructions by the on-duty police officer, and it is prohibited to park vehicles on road shoulders, as this will cause traffic congestion.
