KUCHING, March 26: Sarawak should restore its Sarawak Constabulary and make the Sarawak police force for Sarawakians only, opined Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan.

Voon in a statement today said this would ensure that Sarawakians were given an opportunity and priority to serve Sarawak.

ā€œI have heard growing unhappiness among members of the public and police force concerning the recent promotions and appointments of police officers to hold key posts in Sarawak.

ā€œAs I can recall, since Malaysia was formed in 1963, only two Sarawakians, that is, Tan Sri Hamdan Sirat and Datu Awang Ehsan Joini, held the top post in the police force in Sarawak as Sarawak Police Commissioner, and no Sarawakian has ever held the post of Inspector-General of Malaysia,ā€ he said.

In a recent media statement released by Bukit Aman regarding the promotions and reshuffle of police force’s top posts, Datoā€™ Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, who is currently Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department Intelligence/Operation deputy director, is slotted to take over from Dato Aidi Ismail as Sarawak Police Commissioner.

ACP Wong Ing Fung who is currently the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department deputy director attached to the Perak Police Contingent will also be transferred to Sarawak and promoted to Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) to assume the post of head of Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department.

Meanwhile, Voon claimed that it is an “insult to the people of Sarawak” and Sarawakian police officers, as if to say that Sarawakians are not suitable to hold the post of Sarawak Police Commissioner.

He said being a police officer himself before entering into politics and legal practice, he knows that the post of Sarawak Police Commissioner was “not a difficult one”.

He also said even a senior police inspector can perform this job well for Sarawak because Sarawak has always been peaceful, has a low crime rate and no racial and religious disharmony and no cases of terrorism and subversion. ā€” DayakDaily
