MIRI, 18 March: The Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) has embarked on a project, to translate the Sarawak Land Code (SLC) 1958 which was originally written in English.

This was revealed by its president, Bobby William in a statement today.

`As most of the Dayaks today especially Ibans from the rural areas are not competent in the English language, PBDS has taken upon itself to translate the SLC 1958 so Dayaks can have a better understanding of their land rights as written in the Land Code,` he said.

So far, no political parties or Non-Governmental organisation (NGOs) has ever undertaken such a tedious and monumental effort before.

PBDS is aware of the importance of Dayaks having fair knowledge of the Land Code as Land to the natives are their biggest asset, he opined.

Presently, many Dayaks are ignorant of their rights as spelt out in the Sarawak Land Code 1958.

It is hoped that Dayaks would not continue to be misled by irresponsible individuals, with the translated Land Code available at their fingertips.

Plans to translate the Land Code into another Dayak tribal language such as Bidayuh and Kayan is also being planned for the future, Bobby concluded. -DayakDaily
