Padawan police warn of QR code fraud syndicate, 5 cases reported with nearly RM5,000 in losses

KUCHING, March 4: The Padawan District Police have uncovered a QR code fraud syndicate responsible for five reported cases, resulting in losses totalling RM4,904.99.

Padawan District police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) received reports of the fraud cases on Monday (March 3), which occurred between Feb 21 and March 1 at two different supermarkets.

“Based on our investigations, the syndicate operates by making fraudulent payments through QR codes, with groups of three to four individuals entering targeted premises,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

The police are urging anyone with information about the suspects involved in the QR code fraud to come forward.
