KUCHING, April 11: Some 32 councillors of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), including the chairman and deputy chairman, took their oath of office today for a new three-year term.
Of the total 32, 10 of them are new faces from various component parties under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
Unlike previous terms, which lasted two years, the councillors will have a three-year term from 2025 to 2027.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, officiated the swearing in at the MPP office in Kota Padawan.
In his address, Dr Sim said the role of councillors is becoming more challenging and as front liners, they must equip themselves with various skills and knowledge.
He described the councillors are the “third-tier government” and pointed out that they have a very important role to play in governance.
“As the front liners, equip yourself with various skills and knowledge and stay close to the people you serve,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, on several concerns highlighted by the council, Dr Sim disclosed that the allowance for councillors will be known by June or July this year.
He also said he was aware of the shortage of staff serving in the council and has requested the ministry’s permanent secretary to discuss the matter with the State Secretary.
“I acknowledge the shortage of staff faced by MPP and given size you serve, so I hope to address the issue,” he said.
According to him, the increasing properties under MPP jurisdiction, which is about 81,356 and a population of 350,000, necessitate the council to serve more effectively and efficiently. – DayakDaily
