KUCHING, July 31: Over 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the International Museum Day 2023 celebration at Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) here from July 31 until Aug 5.
The celebration provides visitors with a chance to visit the exhibition, allowing them to become more familiar with the museum and take part in the various organised activities.
This is the third time Sarawak has been chosen as the host for the 27th edition of the national-level celebration after successful events in 2003 and 2013.
With the theme ‘Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing’, the six-day event is co-organised by Malaysian Museum Department (JMM) and Sarawak Museum Department (JMS).
The goal of the national-level International Museum Day 2023 is to increase community awareness about the significance of museum institutions in safeguarding and preserving national treasures.
It also demonstrates the State government’s recognition of the valuable contribution and significant role that museum institutions play.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was present to launch the event at BCM today.
The event featured 34 exhibition booths participated by 800 delegates from museums throughout the country, including one museum from Kalimantan, Indonesia and several other agencies.
Other activities include Sarawak Heritage Kitchen sales, cultural performances, workshops, seminars, forums, and so on.
Amongst those present were Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Malaysian National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang; Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai; Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; International Council of Museums (ICOM) vice president Chang Inkyung; Ministry of National Unity’s secretary-general Dato’ Indera Noridah Abdul Rahim; Malaysian Museum Department director Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim; and Sarawak Museum Department director Nancy Jolhi. — DayakDaily
