MIRI, Aug 26: Four individuals, including a woman, were detained in a significant drug bust in Permyjaya, Miri, on Saturday (August 24).
The operation resulted in the seizure of 105.02 kilograms of syabu (methamphetamine) with an estimated street value of RM3.36 million.
In a press conference held today, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata confirmed that the raids were conducted at two separate houses in Permyjaya.
He highlighted that the drug haul is the second largest in Sarawak this year, following a similar bust in 2018.
The suspects, comprising three local men aged between 32 and 52 and a 26-year-old foreign woman, are currently being held in custody for seven days to assist in further investigations.
Two of the male suspects, aged 32 and 36, have prior records of drug and criminal offences.
All four individuals tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that Miri was being used as a transit point for distributing the drugs,” Datuk Mancha Ata revealed.
The operation also led to the seizure of a Ford Focus, valued at RM39,000, believed to have been used in the drug distribution network.
According to the police, the suspects received wages ranging from RM3,500 to RM12,000 per month for their involvement in the drug trade.
They allegedly used the residential houses as storage facilities before delivering the drugs to buyers under the instructions of their leader.
“The total amount of drugs seized could potentially serve 525,100 addicts,” added Mancha.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. If not sentenced to death, offenders may face a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
The suspects have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for seven days, from August 25 to September 1, to facilitate further investigations. — DayakDaily
