KUCHING, June 12: Due to the two recent fatal accidents along the Selangau stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway, more than 10 miring ceremonies have been held in the last two days (June 10 and June 11) to get rid of ‘bad luck’.
Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira said these ceremonies were held at junctions along the Pan Borneo Highway which link to major longhouse settlements.
On June 5, five were killed while five more were injured in an accident involving two vehicles at Mile 40 of Jalan Sibu-Bintulu near Selangau. Among the five lives claimed by the accident was a two-year-old toddler.
Again on June 6, two were killed in an accident involving a tanker truck and a sedan car at Jalan Stapang Selangau-Sibu road.
The accident claimed one life on the spot and another the following day. The third victim is still in a coma.
“Due to these accidents, the longhouse people of Selangau performed more than 10 mirings, mainly at the junctions leading to their longhouses.
“These mirings were done mainly in the last two days of Saturday and some yesterday (Sunday).
“For the mirings on Saturday, they held it concurrently, at the same time in the morning at different places. They did inform me about what they would be doing,” Gira told DayakDaily.
When pressed for more details, he said one was held at the junction leading to Tanyit Batang Oya, where there are 10 longhouses houses; another one at Jalan Kua Ulu Mukah, which involved the participation of residents from 15 longhouses.
At the junction to Jalan Ng Tajam Batang Oya, residents from 15 longhouses attended the miring, while at the Sekuau junction, there was also a crowd involving residents from 30 longhouses.
Gira said another major one was held at the accident site on June 6 at the Upper Stapang junction. — DayakDaily
