KUCHING, July 26: A daring attempt by two underage teenagers on a motorcycle to evade a roadblock was thwarted by the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) during ‘Ops Motosikal’ at Jalan Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub here on Friday night (July 25).
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the department said the incident occurred when the two teenagers attempted to flee after being instructed to pull over by an officer during the operation.
The operation, led by Sarawak JPJ operations unit chief Mohd Ismail Omar, involved 35 officers who inspected 1,057 vehicles, issued 270 summonses, and seized 12 vehicles for various traffic offences.
“The department frowns seriously on incidents like this (evading roadblocks), more so ones that involve underage drivers or riders, as it not only threatens their lives but also puts the safety of enforcement officers and road users at risk,” said the department.
As such, the department has instructed that the parents or guardians of the involved teenagers be summoned for an interview session, and further action will be taken in accordance with the applicable laws.
Sarawak JPJ also urges all parties, especially parents and guardians, to play a more significant role in educating and monitoring their children’s activities to prevent any involvement in road traffic law violations. — DayakDaily
