MIRI, Sept 5: The Miri Disaster Management Committee Secretariat today issued a directive banning any open burning in this division.
Amongst the details stated in the directive were prohibitions on any form of open burning involving peat soil areas and within a 30km radius of the airport.
The directive was issued following the current and persistent dry and hot weather.
“The public is advised not to do open burning within peat soil areas or 30km from the airport,” disclosed the secretariat in a statement today.
Under Section 29(A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 or Section 29B, those found guilty of open burning can be fined up to RM500,000 or imprisoned up to five years, or both or be compounded not exceeding RM2,000.
To lodge reports on open burning activities, or for enquiries, the public may contact the state Department of Environment (DOE) and the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) at 085-1 800 88 2727 and 085-437388. — DayakDaily
