KUCHING, Nov 15: The implementing agency has yet to begin the preliminary works required for the construction of the 10-kilometre road from Kendaie to Sedaing along Jalan Biawak, despite the allocation of RM77 million by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.
Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang expressed concerns over the delay and urged the relevant authorities to expedite the process so that construction could commence without further setbacks.
“While potential challenges such as logistical issues or environmental concerns may arise, they should not be used as excuses to delay a project of such importance,” he stated during his participation in the Sarawak Budget 2025 debate at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.
Billy emphasised that this project is not merely about building a road; it is a critical lifeline for the communities of Kampung Kendaie, Kampung Bukit Batu, Kampung Pasir Hilir, SK Kendaie, and other local government agencies.
“Once completed, it will provide easier access for the local population, including teachers from SK Kendaie and government staff, to commute to Pekan Lundu and back. Improved connectivity will enhance access to essential services and stimulate economic activities in the region,” he explained.
In addition, Billy highlighted the need to expedite the Kampung Pasir Tengah road project, which involves constructing a six-kilometre paved road, starting from the junction at Jalan Biawak and extending to Kampung Pasir Tengah, in line with JKR R1 specifications, at a total cost of RM37 million.
“Currently, there is no proper road access connecting this area to nearby towns such as Lundu and Sematan. The existing dirt road frequently floods during heavy rain, making it unsafe, especially for schoolchildren.
“A properly constructed paved road is vital to ensure safer, more comfortable, and faster transportation for the residents along this route,” he added. — DayakDaily
