Op Dadu Mega reels in 97 individuals for various gambling acts, confiscates RM66k cash

KUCHING, May 28: The Sarawak police have arrested 97 individuals allegedly involved in online gambling, illegal lottery and cock fighting in 73 raids for the two-day Op Dadu Mega conducted on May 25 and 26.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police (CP) Dato Mancha Ata said the individuals comprised 75 men and 22 women.

“The confiscated items included cash amounting to RM66,591 and 36 smartphones,” he said in a statement today.

Investigation papers have been opened under Section 4b(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of not less than RM10,000 and not more than RM100,000 for each gambling machine confiscated and must also be sentenced to imprisonment for a period no more than five years.

For offences under Section 4a(a) of the same Act, if convicted, an individual would be fined not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM200,000 and imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years.

For the offence of cock fighting, Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999 carries a fine of not over RM2,000 or a jail term of not more than six months or both.

“The police will take strict action against individuals who organise and conduct illegal gambling activities based on existing legal provisions to combat gambling activities in Sarawak.
