KUCHING, July 27: A fire broke out at a landfill in Lingga on Sunday (July 26), affecting an estimated three hectares of the disposal site, with no casualties reported.
In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 8.02pm, and firefighters from the Sri Aman station were deployed.
Upon arrival at 8.52am after travelling 49km, firefighters confirmed that the landfill was on fire, with the blaze estimated to have spread across approximately three hectares.
In an updated report, firefighters deployed one hose line extending 300 feet, two nozzles, and one portable pump, drawing water from an open water source to carry out firefighting operations.
The fire was brought under control at 7.45am today but had not been completely extinguished due to the large area involved. Smoke continued to billow from an area about 300 feet away, while the availability of open water sources at the scene was limited.
Of the three hectares affected, two have been extinguished.
Challenges faced include the ongoing construction of the main road to Lingga, unsatisfactory mobile network coverage, and limited availability of open water sources. — DayakDaily
