BINTULU, Oct 30: Initial findings from OM Sarawak’s study on recovering waste heat from its existing smelting operations indicate the potential to generate up to 70 megawatts (MW) of clean energy.
OM Holdings chief executive officer (CEO) Low Ngee Tong announced this exciting development during OM Sarawak’s 10th anniversary gala dinner, held at a local hotel and officiated by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg last night (Oct 29).
Low explained that the company, which operates the largest ferroalloy smelter outside China in Sarawak, is currently exploring methods to capture and utilise residual heat from its industrial processes, rather than allowing it to go to waste.
“This initiative will significantly enhance the overall energy efficiency of our operations while reducing our environmental footprint and contributing to sustainability,” he stated in the celebration which was broadcast live via Ukas Channel.
Furthermore, Low highlighted that OM Sarawak plans to invest USD250 million over the next five to 10 years to upgrade its furnace systems, aiming to optimise its industrial processes.
“We are prioritising operational excellence by focusing on the reconfiguration of our existing furnaces and replacing some with larger, advanced technologies that incorporate environmental features,” he added.
He outlined OM Sarawak’s vision for the coming decade, which includes developing a sustainable business model through initiatives such as tree planting, harvesting, and replanting to produce charcoal as a renewable alternative to coal.
“Sarawak’s reliable clean energy, strategic approach, and ideal geographical location make it a perfect fit for us,” he praised.
Since its establishment a decade ago, OM Sarawak has grown into a reliable supplier for steel manufacturers in the region, having invested over USD550 million to develop its facility into the largest smelter outside China.
Low expressed confidence that this project will continue to support regional steelmakers by providing a stable supply of alloys.
In 2023 alone, OM Sarawak contributed RM840 million to Sarawak’s economy, creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and fostering new opportunities.
Notably, the company has achieved over 80 percent local workforce representation, which is seven times more at its inception a decade ago.
Low expressed his gratitude to Abang Johari, the Sarawak government, the local community, business stakeholders, and every employee for being the driving force behind OM Sarawak’s accomplishments.
