BETONG, Sept 18: The old Batang Layar Bridge, which was previously closed for repair works, is expected to reopen to the public tomorrow (Sept 19).

According to Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Datu Professor Dr Cassidy Morris, the bridge had been closed for the past two weeks due to damage that required repair works to ensure the safety of road users.

“However, the bridge is recommended for use by light vehicles only due to the age of its structure.

“Heavy vehicles are advised to use alternative routes when travelling in and out of Betong,” he said during a visit to inspect the bridge repair site today, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

The visit was also attended by Sarawak Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development and Layar assemblyman Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, as well as Betong MP Dato Dr Richard Rapu.

Meanwhile, Cassidy said Betong Division JKR would conduct a final safety inspection of the bridge before reopening it to ensure it is safe for public use.

The reopening of the bridge is expected to facilitate the movement of residents and road users, particularly those travelling within and outside the Betong area.

Also present were Betong Resident Datu Richard Michael Abunawas, Betong JKR divisional engineer Jason Boon Ng Tuan, and a representative of the Betong District Officer, Kato Dorsie. — DayakDaily
