KUCHING, March 17: The Magistrate’s Court here has set April 24 for the next mention of a case involving a local man accused of murdering Nurul Asikin Lan, also known as Amoy, whose death gained widespread attention on social media after her body was found in a drain in Tabuan Jaya last December.
Magistrate Sharifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi fixed the date after hearing an application from Deputy Public Prosecutor Jean Siow Chung Hwei, who requested additional time while awaiting the autopsy’s DNA analysis report.
The 28-year-old victim’s decomposed remains were discovered in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja here on December 15 last year.
The accused, 23-year-old Zakwan Mokhtar, merely nodded in acknowledgement as the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was read to him.
According to the charge sheet, Zakwan is alleged to have committed the murder at the same drain on the night of December 14 at around 9.10 PM. However, no plea was recorded, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The court has ordered that the accused remain in remand until the next mention.
Separately, Zakwan was also sentenced to three months in prison under Section 182 of the Penal Code for lodging a false police report regarding Nurul Asikin’s disappearance. — DayakDaily
