KUCHING, Oct 29: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) is collaborating with Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) to develop the Greenhouse Gas Management System (GHG-MS) aimed at streamlining data management, reporting and analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the State.

Controller of Environmental Quality NREB Datu Jack Liam said the initiative will digitalise processes such as application, reporting and verification, allowing industries to manage their GHG information more efficiently through an online platform.

According to Jack, the Guideline on Registration of Accredited External Auditors and the Guideline for Flaring or Venting Control are in the final stages of completion, whereas the Industry Emission Reports for 2023 and 2024 have been compiled.

“The data and information obtained through the (Industry Emission) reports will be used in determining the threshold and (carbon) levy,” said Jack during his speech at the National Environment Day (Sarawak-level) at a resort in Sematan today.

The data gathered in the emission report will assist the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) in its ongoing studies entitled “Sarawak Net Zero and Carbon Plan” and “Study on Carbon Levy and Carbon Pricing of Sarawak” with the World Bank.

Jack also highlighted that enforcement of the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023 will target the oil and gas as well as the energy sectors as a starting point, with the hope of reducing GHG emissions and supporting Sarawak especially, and Malaysia as a whole, in achieving Net Zero by 2050. —DayakDaily
