KUCHING, May 15: United Malays National Organisation (Umno) youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin admitted they had made a mistake by not speaking out against former party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said Umno leaders and members did not protest when Najib took former Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to task.

They were dropped from the cabinet after they came open with their doubts on 1MDB issues.

Khairy said this when interviewed by Channel News Asia which was quoted by Malaysiakini.

“We didn’t want to bell the cat. Nobody, after Muhyiddin was purged, after Shafie was purged… Nobody wanted to acknowledge we had a problem. That was a terrible mistake on our part.

“Was there a signal? Yes, there were clear signals but we became oblivious to the signals,” Khairy was quoted as saying.

The Rembau MP said he would not allow that to happen again where the party allowed their leaders to “be detached from reality” and not ask tough questions.

He said if Umno were to continue with the feudal mindset of protecting the leaders from the truth, Umno would go extinct. — DayakDaily
