Not owning smartphone to scan MySJ code is not a crime, says DAP’s Chong

KUCHING, April 25: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has written a letter of appeal to the State Health Department in response to police summonses issued to two citizens for failing to scan the MySejahtera code because they do not own a smartphone.

According to Chong in a Facebook Live session today, he received a complaint in which the police went to a premises in Kuching last Friday (April 22) and issued summonses to two individuals identified as Mr Chong and Mr Chai, who work there, for failing to scan the MySejahtera code.

ā€œThe issue is that neither of them owns a smartphone, but they record their check-in and temperature details in the logbook every day.

ā€œThey felt it was unfair because the police told them to stay at home and not work because they donā€™t have MySejahtera.

ā€œSo the police can support them instead if they don’t work? Or the government?ā€ he said.

Chong went on to say that the police issued summonses to the two citizens, and that when they came to him for assistance, he assisted them in writing a letter of appeal to be sent to the State Health Department in order to have their summonses revoked.

ā€œNot owning a smartphone is not a crime.

ā€œFurthermore, they have recorded their check-in and temperature details in the logbook on a daily basis.

ā€œI hope the police can be considerate and understand that not all citizens have smartphones and that MySejahtera cannot be downloaded if one does not have a smartphone, but as long as check-in and temperature details are recorded in a logbook on a daily basis, it is fine,ā€ Chong said. ā€” DayakDaily
