KUCHING, June 24: Not all heroes wear capes, and that is undoubtedly true for Adeline Asong Liang Ching Foong, who stepped forward in a patient’s time of need.

A few days ago, the Sibu Hospital Blood Bank (SHBB) received an urgent call for help for a patient in need of a blood transfusion. What made it even more challenging was that the patient was detected to have Anti-Jk3 antibodies and could only receive blood from donors with Jk-Null blood, one of the rarest blood types.

“Jk-Null is one of the rarest blood types to be found and difficult to obtain, especially in Malaysia. Throughout Asia, only 0.9 per cent of the population has that blood type.

“Realising how critical the situation was, we immediately began to search for a suitable donor, starting from Kuching to Penang, Ipoh, and the National Blood Centre in Kuala Lumpur, who all cooperated,” said the SHBB in a post on Facebook.

In a race against time, the hospital also contacted known individuals with Jk-Null blood, and Adeline was among the donors whose blood was found to be compatible with the patient at Sibu Hospital.

When she was contacted, she was en route from Julau to Sibu to attend to personal matters. When she was informed of the patient’s situation, Adeline did not hesitate to help and headed to the hospital to donate her blood.

Adeline’s selflessness made a difference, as the patient was discharged after the blood transfusion and showed promising signs of recovery.

“We extend our highest appreciation to Adeline for her generosity and swift action that saved a life. May all her and her family’s affairs always be eased and blessed.

“We also wish to say thank you to all blood banks who helped in this mission. Your commitment and cooperation were appreciated,” said the SHBB. — DayakDaily
