KUCHING, June 8: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has called on individuals facing health issues or personal challenges to never feel ashamed of their circumstances, urging them to seek help and support without fear of stigma.
Speaking to reporters after the Sukan Orang Pekak Malaysia (Sopma) Baton Run 2025 held this morning at the MBKS grounds here, Wee emphasised that society must not marginalise those who are less fortunate or living with medical conditions, as modern medicine and technology now offer greater opportunities for care and inclusion.
An audio recording of the doorstop interview was provided to DayakDaily after the event.
“I feel that today’s event (Sopma Baton Run 2025) is a very meaningful one. As you can see, I genuinely hope that in every corner of society, we recognise that there are people who may be less fortunate—some living with illnesses or other conditions. But that does not mean we should leave them behind,” said Wee.
He expressed hope that with modern advancements in technology and medicine, individuals, regardless of their circumstances, will not feel ashamed but instead have the courage to come forward.
The mayor also highlighted that Sarawak is a caring and inclusive society that embraces everyone, regardless of skin colour, background, or financial status.
He urged communities to continue offering love, protection, and mutual support to ensure that no one feels left out.
“As long as we live in this society, as long as we are Sarawakians, and as long as we are human beings, we should help and protect one another, and continue to pass on this love—so that everyone can feel the warmth and compassion that define Sarawak,” said Wee.
The Sopma Baton Run 2025, organised by the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association, was officiated by Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
Also present were Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) deputy director Norhayati Abdul Rahman, federal JKMS deputy director Mohd Ali Taib, Sarawak Deaf Sports Association chairman Ko Ming Liang, and chairman of the 2025 Sopma Baton Run organising committee, Victor Hii Lik Nguong. — DayakDaily
