KUCHING, Jan 17: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has taken the initiative to organise two special programmes to ensure no low-income family in his constituency is left behind in celebrating Chinese New Year.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) news report, Yap said that the two programmes—‘Program Jualan Istimewa’ and ‘Program Bantuan Makanan Tahun Baru Cina’—are not to just assist, but to also carry the messages of compassion and attentiveness to the less fortunate who are usually forgotten, especially during festive seasons.
“We are offering 500 festive food baskets at a subsidised price of RM30, in collaboration with the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM), Sarawak Consumer Welfare Association (SCWA), and Farley Supermarket. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden of B40 families.
“In addition, 100 food baskets will be distributed free of charge to the hardcore poor with a list of recipients provided by community leaders.
“As we enjoy the festivities, we need to remember that there are those who are less fortunate. With these two programmes, we hope to ease their burden and provide an opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year together,” he said.
He said this during a press conference yesterday (Jan 16).
According to a Facebook post by the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kota Sentosa branch, both programmes will take place on Jan 24.
In addition to the food assistance programme, the SCWA also announced a special road safety campaign to be held this month.
The campaign focuses on the safety of motorcyclists, especially among the B40 community, by giving away 700 free petrol vouchers and safety leaflets at six major petrol stations in Kuching.
SCWA president Melson Chai said that this initiative is not only aimed at providing financial assistance but also at raising awareness of road safety.
“Motorcyclists, especially from the B40 group, are among the groups most vulnerable to the risk of road accidents.
“With the collaboration of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and the Road Transport Department (JPJ), we want to help them through safety education and practical support. This step is hoped to save lives and foster a culture of safety on the road,” he added. — DayakDaily
