KUCHING, Dec 11: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) has reaffirmed its support for Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim despite being excluded from the federal cabinet, stating that DAP did not impose any conditions for its support, including cabinet posts.

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the party is in the unity government for better governance for the country, not for positions.

“From our side here, we speak as one entity (with national DAP). Our secretary-general (Anthony Loke Siew Fook) has commented that our support for Anwar is unconditional.

“There were no conditions imposed by DAP to support Anwar as Prime Minister because we have that belief and confidence that he, after the struggle of over 20 years and remaining true to his principles of good governance and accountability and now appointed as Prime Minister, will implement any policies based on those principles,” he told reporters during a press conference held at Sarawak DAP headquarters here today.

He further said now that DAP and Pakatan Harapan (PH) are the dominant force, he believed that they can uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance in the federal government.

“Through these principles, all elected Sarawak DAP Members of Parliament will continue to play our role as the backbenchers of the federal government and voice out for the people of Sarawak.

“We will do our best to provide the necessary check and balance in Parliament and to ensure that the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance are complied with by the ministries and government agencies of this unity government,” he added.

Within Sarawak itself, he said, the party will continue to play its role as a constructive opposition to uphold the principle of accountability and good governance within the democratic system for the benefit of Sarawakians.

“It is in the interest of Sarawakians to have a strong counterbalance and accountability within the State and we as Sarawak DAP will continue to play that role to strengthen democracy and good governance in Sarawak,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
