Nine picked up by Miri police for cockfighting on Sunday

MIRI,July 15:  The police has picked up nine individuals alleged to be involved in cockfighting at an open space along Jalan Hatmoni, Tudan Phase 3, on Sunday afternoon.

According to Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, a team from Miri Criminal Investigation Department rushed to the scene after receiving a tip-off on the illegal activity.


In the 3.50 pm-raid, police managed to pick up nine men, all locals, including senior citizens.

“Police also recovered six live cockerels, one betting board and a weighing scale.   All seized items and suspects are currently being detained under police custody,” Lim said when contacted.

Suspects are aged between 35 to 63 years old.  

The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1962, which carries the maximum RM500 fine and jail of up to three months.

At least 20 individuals tried to flee from the scene when the police rounded up the whole area on Sunday.

Some were even found hiding in the nearby bushes in an attempt to escape from the police. — DayakDaily
