Ng Jing Xuan breaks Sukma record in javelin throw, secures Sarawak’s 4th gold in athletics

KUCHING, Aug 21: Sarawak athlete Ng Jing Xuan set a new Malaysia Games (Sukma) record in the women’s javelin throw event held at Sarawak Stadium here today, securing her a gold medal.

The 20-year-old cleared a distance of 45.12 metres, surpassing the previous record of 44.98m set by fellow Sarawakian Ho Sin Hui during the 2008 edition of the games in Terengganu.

The silver medal went to Terengganu’s Noor Aliya Alias (39.11m) while Sabah’s Maryjane Juberin bagged bronze (39.01m).

Ng’s next event will be the women’s shot put which will take place at the same venue tomorrow (Aug 22).

Her victory brought Sarawak’s medal tally in athletics to four gold, two silver and six bronze, totalling 12 medals.

The three other gold medals were contributed by Jonah Chang Rigan in the men’s shot put and men’s discus throw events, and Pauline Ului in the women’s discus throw.

Meanwhile, Clezendra Chanda Cevester Empari delivered two silver medals in the women’s 1,500m and women’s 3,000m steeplechase events, respectively.

The six bronze medals were delivered by Sylvia Nawan Sa through the women’s high jump event, followed by Ormilla Octavia Codday Nyadau in the women’s 100m and 200m, Maritza Ferrer Neil Armstrong in the women’s long jump, Akmal Kifflyza in the men’s decathlon and Faris Khuzairie Faizal in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. — DayakDaily
