KUCHING, March 20: The long-awaited road improvement project at Jalan Kwong Lee Bank/Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim (Phase II) near Tanah Puteh Health Clinic has been completed ahead of schedule and is now officially open to the public.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng announced that the upgraded roads and lighting system were finished earlier than expected, ensuring smoother traffic flow and enhanced connectivity in the area.
“Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) was initially scheduled to complete the work by March 31, but they successfully wrapped up their part today (March 20)—14 days ahead of schedule.
“Their teams have been working tirelessly, even through rain, to expedite the completion,” Wee told reporters during a site visit today.
He also acknowledged Telekom Malaysia for removing outdated roadside poles, contributing to a more organised streetscape.

The newly opened link road (left) at Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim provides an alternative route, while the road on the right leads towards Tanah Puteh Clinic.
As part of the enhancements, 20 new streetlights have been installed to improve road safety and visibility.
The overall project covers 320 meters of connecting road and includes 640 meters of resurfacing work, significantly easing congestion, particularly near Taman Puteh Health Clinic.
“This road will serve as a crucial alternative route for those traveling to Petra Jaya and Kuching City Centre, reducing congestion.
“It will also function as a permanent traffic diversion route to Bintawa, enhancing accessibility and convenience for all road users,” he added.
Wee emphasised that the initiative aligns with MBKS’s commitment to improving Kuching’s road infrastructure and urged local representatives to engage in constructive contributions rather than resorting to criticism.
“Pointing fingers and scolding people will not get things done. We always welcome productive discussions and cooperation to ensure the continuous enhancement of our city’s infrastructure,” he stated.
With this phase completed, additional road enhancement projects will continue as part of Kuching’s broader urban development plan.
Wee reaffirmed MBKS’s commitment to working closely with stakeholders such as Sarawak Energy and Telekom Malaysia to create a safer, more efficient road network for the city’s residents.
