New funeral Rajang cluster emerges in Tg Manis after mass infections of 28 by Sarikei woman

KUCHING, March 22:  New Covid-19 Rajang Cluster has been announced following a mass infection of 29 cases, brought about by a 55-year-old woman from Sarikei to a funeral gathering in Kampung Rajang, Tanjung Manis, Mukah.

According to the statement of Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, the spread of these 28 Covid-19 positive cases stemmed from a funeral ceremony and kenduri tahlil (prayer and feasting gathering) on March 3, 2021.


The Rajang Cluster in Tanjung Manis is a community cluster that has been detected in Kampung Rajang, Tanjung Manis, Mukah.

It is also a cross-district infection as the index case (Case 11,463) is a 55-year-old woman from Sarikei who had attended the funeral.  A day later after the funeral on March 4, 2021 she was found to be positive through active case detection in Sarikei district.

“So far, the cluster involves individuals and contacts from several districts including Tanjung Manis, Sarikei and Kuching.

“As a result of active case screening and detection to the index case, an additional 28 Covid-19 positive cases were detected,” said SDMC.

Apart from the 29 positive cases, among the total of 271 individuals screened in relation to this cluster, 159 showed negative results while 83 individuals are still pending results.

SDMC stated that all 29 cases linked to this cluster have been referred and admitted to hospitals and low risk quarantine centres in Mukah, Sarikei, Sibu,  Bintulu and also Kuching districts for the purpose of isolation and further treatment. — DayakDaily
