KUCHING, Nov 3: A new bridge connecting Miri to Marudi is expected to open before Christmas this year.
According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said completion of the bridge will also replace the existing ferry service to facilitate travel for those from the northern region.
“The infrastructure project not only meets transportation needs but also demonstrates the Sarawak government’s commitment to enhancing quality of life for the people, especially in rural areas.
“With this bridge, it will be much easier for us to connect with relatives in Marudi and Baram without relying on the ferry,” he said at the opening ceremony of ‘Taste of Borneo 3.0’ Food Carnival 2024 in Miri on Nov 2.
He disclosed that the Sarawak government also has long-term plans to construct a new road connecting Miri to Long Terawan, and to Limbang, passing through areas outside the UNESCO World Heritage site in Mulu.
He said the strategic route could be directly connected to Brunei Darussalam, creating a circular road network that would boost the local economy and tourism in Northern Sarawak.
Meanwhile, on Sarawak’s plans to establish its own airline, Abang Johari said the aim is to increase international arrivals at key destinations in Sarawak, including Miri, Mulu, and Niah. — DayakDaily
