KUCHING, Aug 1: A rare and violent thunderstorm that recently swept across several parts of Batu Kawa, particularly the Desa Wira area, has brought out the best in community spirit, with residents, local leaders, and agencies banding together in a swift and coordinated response to help those affected.
Despite strong winds blowing off roofs and fallen trees blocking roads, residents in the affected areas have begun returning to normalcy thanks to the joint efforts of government agencies, local councils, and community volunteers.
In a statement, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the assemblyman for Batu Kawa, praised the resilience and unity displayed by the community.
He said a team from his service centre, along with Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, political secretary to the Premier, Kho Teck Wan, and community leaders, were among the first to visit the affected sites after the incident.
“They assessed the situation on the ground and promptly coordinated with relevant authorities to carry out clean-up works, including the removal of fallen trees and other post-disaster efforts,” he said.
At the same time, Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, expressed relief that no casualties were reported while also noting the increasing frequency of extreme weather patterns.
“Climate change is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Prolonged heat waves can be suddenly interrupted by powerful storms with unusually intense rainfall and wind speeds,” he added.
He further reported that homes with damaged roofs have largely undergone basic repairs to ensure families can return safely.
In addition, MPP has provided Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) bins in the Desa Wira area to assist in cleaning efforts.
“This incident demonstrated the resilience, unity, and mutual support within our community during times of crisis. It also showcased the efficiency of our local agencies in responding to natural disasters.
“Together, we are committed to rebuilding stronger and ensuring our communities remain safe and prepared for future challenges,” he said.
