National Scam Response Centre established to bust online fraudsters

Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar

KUCHING, Oct 14: The Federal government has established the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) to coordinate rapid response for online fraud cases.

Caretaker Minister In The Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the NSRC is a local response centre that combines resources and expertise from the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM), banking institutions and telecommunication service companies to receive reports from victims of cyber fraud.

This is to enable coordinated and immediate action to block the further flow of funds and take enforcement action against cybercrime perpetrators.

“Fraud victims can directly contact their bank’s dedicated line regarding cyber fraud incident reports (which will operate 24 hours) or the NSRC line, which is 997, which will operate every day, including public holidays from 8am to 8pm.

“The immediate action of contacting the bank or the NSRC is very important to enable action to block further withdrawal of the victim’s money from the banking system,” he said in a statement today.

Wan Junaidi, who is the Santubong incumbent, further said to facilitate enforcement actions, the victim needs to provide information related to the cyber fraud incident experienced when contacting the bank or NSRC.

This includes communication between the victim and the suspect and transaction information that led to the victim being defrauded, such as the account number and bank name of the victim and the suspect and the number of funds involved.

Members of the public are also reminded always to be alert when contacted by those claiming to be from the authorities or related to any dubious services.

“NSRC, related agencies under NSRC or banks will not contact the general public to request personal banking information such as PIN number, TAC, OTP or password.

“The public is advised to make appropriate checks to verify the validity of the facts if contacted by the party requesting the information,” he added.
