KUCHING, Aug 10: The late Major Michael Riman Bugat, a national hero who passed away on Monday (Aug 7), was safely laid to rest today at the Kuching Heroes’ Cemetery here.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report today, the deceased’s body arrived at Makam Pahlawan at 9.49am and was safely buried at 10am, with the funeral ceremony concluding at 10.20am.
The funeral of the Bravery Medal (PGB) recipient was attended by leaders, comrades-in-arms, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), family members, and friends of the deceased.
Earlier, the deceased’s body was placed in the Kuching Auditorium so that leaders, relatives, and acquaintances could pay their final respects.
One of his comrades-in-arms who is also the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa patron, Lieutenant General (B) Datuk Sri Zaini Mohd Said expressed sadness at the passing of the deceased whom he considered his own brother.
“I am saddened by his death, but I am also proud because I had the opportunity to serve with a brave and courageous person in fighting for the peace of this country,” he said.
The late Riman, a revered figure celebrated for his courage and valour during multiple clashes with the communist forces in the 1970s, passed away at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) on Aug 7 at the age of 71.
Also present to pay their last respects to the deceased were the Deputy Secretary of the Sarawak government (Administration) representing the Sarawak government, Datu Buckland Bangik, the Commander of the First Division of the Malaysian Infantry Major General Hassan Embong, the Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, and the Director-General of the Department of Veteran Affairs ATM Major General Zambry Jeffrey Darus. — DayakDaily
