Nangka rep provides new canopies for 13 traders after destructive thunderstorm in Sibu

SIBU, April 8: Thirteen Ramadan Bazaar traders at Dataran Fasa II Tuanku Haji Bujang here whose canopies were blown away during thunderstorms and heavy rain last Wednesday (April 5) received 23 new canopies donated by Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Dr Annuar who is the Nangka assemblyman informed that the thundershowers incident had destroyed some 21 canopies at the Bazaar.

However, he noted that the traders had to continue their business with two weeks left to welcome the arrival of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

This prompted him to buy new canopies and present them to the victims the following day after the incident.

One of the victims, Mohamed Abdul Jalil, 29, said the traders have suffered many losses due to the disaster.

Nevertheless, he said he had not given up hope to continue doing business again.

At the same time, a mass iftar (breaking fast) programme at Dataran Tuanku Haji Bujang Sibu will be held today with an estimated attendance of over 10,000.

Also present during the canopies presentation ceremony were political secretary to Sarawak Premier, Sayed Azmee Wan Junaidi and Councillor Raden Khairulzaman Raden Bustari. — DayakDaily
