KUCHING, Nov 1: A group of MYAirline Sdn Bhd (MYAirline) airline employees who have been off-duty since the abrupt suspension of the airline’s operations since Oct 12 have filed a police report concerning their unpaid wages.
A group of approximately 20 workers from MYAirline filed a police report at the Sepang District Police Headquarters (IPD) in Sepang, Selangor, accompanied by Kamarul Baharin Mansor, the secretary-general of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), Bernama reported.
According to the news outlet, Kamarul told the media that the police report was made because MYAirline allegedly failed to make salary payments and did not make contributions to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organisation (SSO) since last May.
It was reported that the suspension of MyAirline’s operations on Oct 12, which was said to be due to financial pressure, also raised questions among the airline’s more than 500 employees regarding the status of their services in the company that started its maiden flight on Dec 1.
On Oct 16, MYAirline’s interim director and executive, Datuk Seri Azharuddin A Rahman, was reported to have said that his party would give priority to solving two important issues, namely refunding the money of customers who have made payments for ticket bookings and paying staff salaries.
Bernama further reported that Sepang District police chief ACP Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof, when contacted, confirmed receiving the report and will conduct a related investigation in addition to referring the case to the IPD Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and IPD Kuala Langat.
Kamarul said that the issue requires the intervention of the government, especially the Ministry of Human Resources, to ensure that the welfare of the airline staff involved is protected and they can continue their lives.
“Their lives are currently greatly affected and I hope the government will take note and act immediately,” he said, as quoted by Bernama. — DayakDaily
