KUCHING, Aug 1: The search and rescue (SAR) team working on MV Tung Sung which capsized near Pulau Burung in Sebuyau, discovered a body inside the cabin of the ship at approximately 12.14pm yesterday afternoon.
In a press release, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak director First Admiral (Maritime) Zin Azman Md Yunus stated that the Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) of Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) had been mobilised in advance to check the condition of the ship to detect if there was any poisonous gas that would endanger the safety of the SAR team.
“After it was determined that the ship was safe, a search was conducted, and a body was discovered in the ship’s cabin.”
He also stated that the recovered body was taken to the Sarawak River Board Jetty (LSSS) in Sebuyau before being turned over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and transported to Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for identity verification and further investigation.
Search efforts have been halted and will resume if new leads emerge, he said, as there have been no new indications regarding the three other missing victims reported to be onboard the ship during the incident, which occurred at 11pm on July 19.
On July 22, four of eight missing crew members from the capsized MV Tung Sung were found dead after the vessel sank in Sebuyau waters. However, the identities of the four bodies have not been publicly disclosed yet. — DayakDaily
