KUCHING, July 21: Mutual trust between the government and the people is the foundation of building a harmonious and resilient city, says Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
Wee emphasised that trust, when nurtured, naturally cultivates noble values such as loyalty, justice, courage, and kindness.
He stressed that these values are not only essential in religious or community life but also form the core of effective and ethical urban governance.
“MBKS is committed to uphold these values in city management, always remaining loyal to the people, fair in policy formulation, and inclusive towards all communities regardless of race or religion.
“Mutual trust between the government and the people is essential in our efforts to build a harmonious and resilient city,” he said, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Wee was speaking at the ‘Guan Kong Deity Birthday Celebration Dinner’ held at SJK Chung Hua No 3 here yesterday (July 20).
Commenting on the event, he explained that it was not merely a religious occasion but also a symbol of cultural strength and unity among the multi-ethnic community in Kuching.
He also acknowledged the role of houses of worship such as temples, not only as spiritual spaces but also as community centres active in welfare, education, and social support.
In this regard, Wee commended the organisers’ efforts in fostering unity and preserving cultural heritage, describing it as a prime example of how culture can serve as a bridge towards a more united and tolerant society.
“MBKS will continue to support the organisation of cultural programmes that are inclusive and instil the values of harmony.
“Such efforts contribute greatly to forming the modern identity of Kuching without forgetting its cultural roots,” he added.
Wee also expressed hope that Kuching will continue to grow as a thriving city where all residents can live together in an atmosphere of mutual trust. — DayakDaily
