KUCHING, Nov 1: Software developers of online games such as Roblox may face appropriate action as the Malaysian government reviews licensing to better control access and content, particularly for children and teenagers.
In a TVS news report, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, said her ministry supports measures to strengthen safeguards against violent content in online video games, which have been rising and impacting young users.
“We have been discussing this and its guidelines, especially regarding when children are allowed to own and use smartphones.
“Restrictions on certain games are necessary. The matter is still under discussion, and no final decision has been made,” she said after attending the PPS Management Training and Simulation Programme and the Early Registration of Disaster Victims’ Information Campaign into the JKM Disaster Info System for Sarawak 2025 here, today.
She added that, beyond legal controls, parents, schools, and communities play a vital role in ensuring video games are used responsibly and healthily.
This followed an incident in Kampung Parit Nipah Laut, Batu Pahat, where a six-year-old was seriously injured after being attacked by his nine-year-old brother, reportedly influenced by Roblox.
Early investigations found that the assault was triggered when the younger sibling caused his brother to lose a large amount of points he had accumulated in the game. — DayakDaily
