KUCHING, June 16: The 3rd Mile Market toilet facility will undergo a major upgrade following concerns raised over its condition, which was caused by a blockage in the floor trap and an old drainage pipe.
According to a statement, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai said that the obstruction has led to slow drainage and intermittent flooding, which requires major rectification, including hacking and reconstruction of the drainage system.
“The toilet facility at the 3rd Mile Market is very old and in need of complete upgrading works. In response, MPP has secured the BP1 allocation this year to upgrade the entire toilet.
“The project was tendered through an open tender process, with the tender published on May 10, 2025, and closed on May 19, 2025. After completing the proper evaluation process, the contract was officially awarded today, marking the handover date of the project to the appointed contractor. The contract duration is five months,” he said.
The upgrading works involve the following:
- Construction of new toilet cubicles
- New tiling works
- Replacement of windows and doors
- New ceiling installation
- Upgrading of sanitary fittings
- Installation of a tabletop with a wash hand basin
- Plumbing works
- Installation of downlights for better lighting
MPP also assured hawkers and marketgoers that the matter is being handled with urgency and commitment, and regrets any inconvenience caused during this period.
The council also added that it remains focused on improving public facilities under its care and delivering better service to the people. — DayakDaily
